| Is your current website
mobile friendly?
You may think that since
you paid a professional website developer to build
you a website that your site
already works great on mobile devices. You may also
think bad things don’t
happen to good people. In both cases, you’d probably
be wrong.
The fact of the matter is that the state of HTML rendering
in the wireless world is all over the map right now.
Some browsers, like Pocket Internet Explorer, are actually
pretty good at parsing through standard web pages.
Others can scarcely handle layout rules at all. And
still worse are the mobile browsers that load all CSS
and javascript files, attempt to use them, and screw
up the experience even more in the process.
Build a Mobile Version of your site or look the other
way.
Unfortunately, if your website is not mobile-friendly...
you really only have two choices. Build a mobile version
of your website. Or just accept the fact that a majority
of the mobile world will never use your website.
What is Mobile-Friendly?
By
pulling out everything a mobile device can possibly
choke on before it even gets to the mobile device,
we can create a mobile version of our site which is
not only viewable on more devices but is much quicker
to download as well. This is mobile friendly.
Find out if your website is mobile friendly
Google has a tool that will convert any webpage
to display the way your mobile device would display
it. You can try it here: http://www.google.com/gwt/n.
You'll probably be very surprised at how hideous your
site reads in a mobile device. After you look at how
your website displays, take a look at how a properly
optimized site, such as MSN.com, looks in a mobile
device.
